Bustum Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Bustum is black metal band from Osijek, Croatia. We’re formed in 2001. by Demoniac who is still in the band in the role of guitarist & back vocal. We have three demo materials and one full-length recorded in 2012 and released through cult American label Regimental Records on CD. In the beginning of 2016 you are able to purchase our full-lenght on tape format via Hungarian label Iron County Records.

2.How would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recordings?

Straight forward black metal! No bullshits! No making „hot water“ out of this! We play black metal what he needed to be. Fast black metal with guitars like razors in your ears, violent and loud vocals and thundering drums.

3.The band has been around since 2001 but so far has only released 3 demo's and a full length, can you tell us a little bit more about the gap in between releases?

I came in the band around 2011 but I know that thay didn’t have good opportunities to record more in the past. We live on Balkan and this area is damaged heavily with wars and economical situation that is absolute badly. So if you want to enter the studio here 99% of studio owners will try to rip you off for money and give you shit out of result and especially that we didn’t have good studios for metal music on Balkan (ex-Yugoslavia). No there’s few studios in Serbia, few (maybe) in Croatia, one in Bosnia... and that is it (that I know). So we can say that Bustum made all that time-gaps between materials due to financial and technical problems.

4.You label your music as 'demoniac black metal', can you tell us a little bit more about this term?

We needed something to write in booklet on one page, so I (Nicor) just took Demoniac’s artistic name and add before words „black metal“.

5.Your lyrics cover Inner Demonology and Chaosophia, how important is your dedication to the black arts?

We write our lyrics about biggest demon that ever came to this earth and which we are part of, humanity. Humanity is probably the biggest venom ever made.
It is very important, there’s no point write lyrics all the time. When you find yourself inspired or utterly disgusted, than write what you feel or see or hear. That is the best way to produce some hellishly good texts.

6.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Bustum'?

Back in the days, when Demoniac came up with idea to form a band in Croatia, he just wanted some obscure name, to sound mighty and evil, and he find Bustum, which sounds perfectly. After some time when band become more than teenage wish for music, than name Bustum started to collecting it’s power as one of the most trustful names in small croatian black metal scene. People in Croatia still think of Bustum as one of pioneers of black metal in Croatia. (But for me that is city Rijeka and their bands from nineties! haha)

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Band isn’t active on stage for almost six years, due personal obligations and jobs of Demoniac and me. But in the past they have some pretty good shows. I wasn’t part of band in that time, so I can’t speak of live performances from past.

8.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

We had some calls but we weren’t able to honored them in proper way, to do live performances on way that we wanted so we canceled them. Currently, Demoniac is in Ireland, so no plans for near-by future gigs, ’cause there’s something about 1700 miles between him and me.

9.Recently Neverheard Distro have re-issued your 2013 album on cassette, what are your thoughts on the product?

Actually Iron County Records is name of label that put re-release of our album on tape format. I think that label did a great job with them. Tape looks great and very professional. So go on http://ironcountyrecords.blogspot.com and order your copy, you will not regert if you worship old-school tape value. I think that they made 250 copies or so.

10.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?

From Balkan it was shitty almost none, but that is destiny of almost all bands here. Fans here doesn’t support bands with buying their merch or releases. We have good feedback from Asia and South America. Suoth Americans are fuckin’ crazy, they sent us some of most insane messages. They are really true metal maniacs. And then is a small group of people from Europe who support us and from America also.

11.When can we expect new material and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Due our „distance problem“ and our „day-time obligations“ I really can’t tell you when you can expect our new material/s. We spoke few times about making some EP material or single material with one or two new songs, but we will see what future holds for Bustum.
I really don’t know about music style in future. I hope we’ll stay with this one straight forward black metal attitude, but knowing Demoniac, we probably will.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Black metal generally have the biggest influence on Bustum, and logically that band took that genre to play and create audio art.
I can’t speak in Demoniac’s name, but I grow up on punk and black metal so I listen 90% bands that I listened in my teen days. Bands like Marduk (with Legion), Impaled Nazarene, The Exploited, Motörhead , G.B.H., Sex Pistols, Carpathian Forest,... etc. Nowdays most of the time in my player spend: Infernal War – Axiom, Revenge - Behold.Total.Rejection, Misþyrming - Söngvar elds og óreiðu & Dead Congregation - Promulgation of the Fall.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
